Care and Display: How to Light a Glow Piece at Home

A FLY Miami Art glow piece is two artworks in one. The daylight version is a finished pop sculpture that holds its own in any room. The blacklight version is a second piece that only the right lighting can reveal. This is a short guide to setting that second piece up at home.

The basics

Every original glow piece in the FLY Miami Art catalog uses UV reactive pigments folded into the final color layer. The pigment activates under ultraviolet light, most reliably at 365 nm or 395 nm wavelengths. Standard incandescent or LED bulbs do not activate the glow.

Choosing a UV bulb

Two practical options work well for most homes. A 365 nm fixture produces the cleanest activation with the least visible purple cast on surrounding walls. A 395 nm fixture is cheaper, easier to find, and produces a warmer overall tone with slightly more visible purple.

Either works. The studio recommends 365 nm for collectors who want the most accurate color in the glow state and 395 nm for a softer, more atmospheric effect.

Fixture placement

Mount the UV fixture above and slightly forward of the piece, angled down at about 30 to 45 degrees. Avoid pointing the bulb directly at viewers. For wall pieces, a small picture light style fixture works well. For sculpture, a small spot light from above produces the most even glow.

Switching modes

The cleanest setup is a smart bulb or a simple wall switch that toggles the UV fixture independently of the room lights. Daylight viewing requires no special equipment. To activate the glow state, dim or turn off room lighting and turn on the UV fixture.

Daily care

Dust the piece with a soft microfiber cloth as needed. Avoid liquid cleaners on the surface. Keep the piece out of direct outdoor sun for years on end, which can dim the pigment over decades. Indoor placement preserves the work essentially indefinitely.

Display ideas

A wall piece looks best in a room with controllable lighting, such as a living room, primary bedroom, or home bar. A sculpture on a pedestal or console, lit from above with a small UV picture light, becomes the conversation piece of any party.

When in doubt

The studio is happy to recommend specific bulbs and fixtures by piece. Contact through flymiami.art and include the piece title and the room you are placing it in.

Peace. Love. Joy. Unity.
