Collecting Original Pop Art: A Buyer's Guide
Buying original art is the best decision a first time collector can make and the most intimidating one. There is no list price database, no obvious upgrade path, no review aggregator. This guide is for the buyer who wants their first or fifth piece of original pop art and wants a straight answer about how to do it well.
Original versus print
An original is a one of one. A print is a reproduction, even when it is signed and numbered. Both have a place in a collection, but only originals carry the marks of the artist's hand and only originals appreciate in a way that is connected to the artist's career. Everything in the FLY Miami Art shop labeled Original is one of one.
What to look for in a piece
Three things. First, does the piece move you. Second, is the artist a real person with a real practice. Third, is the work documented, signed, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. If any of those are missing, walk away.
Price tiers and what they mean
Most original pop art today falls into three buckets. Entry pieces in the low four figures from emerging or mid career artists. Mid tier originals at five to ten thousand from artists with gallery or biennale recognition. Major works from artists with sustained museum or biennale presence at higher amounts.
FLY Miami Art originals start around $1,000 for smaller works and reach $10,000 for monumental wall pieces and sculpture. Public installation related editions sit in the middle tier.
How to verify the artist
Check for at least two of the following: representation by a recognized gallery, inclusion in a juried biennale or major fair, public installation work, press coverage in art publications. Facundo Yebne, the artist behind FLY Miami Art, holds Florence Biennale XV (Fourth Prize, Installation Art), Art Basel Miami Beach 2025, and two permanent public installations on Lincoln Road.
How to ship and store an original
Originals ship insured, tracked, in custom crates for sculpture and rigid mailers for wall work. Display indoors, away from direct sun, with stable humidity. For glow pieces, a UV blacklight is optional but recommended for evening viewing.
Why buying from the studio matters
When the buyer purchases directly from the artist's studio, the provenance chain has one link. That makes future authentication and resale simpler and protects the value of the piece.
Where to start in the FLY Miami Art catalog
For first time collectors, the smaller wall pieces in the Sculpture and Wall Art collections are the natural entry. For collectors who want a piece tied to the public installations, the UnityBeak Trilogy is the closest connection. Commissions are accepted for buyers who want a work tuned to a specific space or story.
Peace. Love. Joy. Unity.
